The world is new to me: forests, grasslands, streams; creating an intractable confusion of water and earth, a beautiful private diorama.
I breathe deeply, taking in the scent of forest and air. The same afternoon sun that warms my skin joins the shadow of the forest over the turbulent dark-green sea of the rolling terrain and silent landscape.
The glories and the charms which the moon and the sun and the twilight wrought upon the river's face emerge. All the grace, the beauty, the poetry had gone out of the majestic river!
And the water was clear.
