The Map Only Slowly Emerges
Kevin Hodgson
for Digital Writing Month

The first time I wrote an
I Am From ... Poem,
I could only think of
tree forts, riverbanks, snowy bogs
and bicycles, and lazy summers
in the wooded terrain with friends;

The second time I wrote an
I Am From ... Poem,
I wandered into the past of
electric guitars, deep loss, bonfires,
and beaches, and hazy Autumns
in the wooded terrain with secrets;

The third time I wrote an
I Am From ... Poem,
I cherished my adult status as
father, teacher, musician, writer,
and husband and crazy times
in the wooded terrain of this family;

The next time I write an
I Am From Poem,
I will locate myself on an imaginary map of
spaces, attitudes, and lines of longitudes
and latitudes, and connected lines
in the wooded terrain of the world.
