Seb Lester works in the United Kingdom as a type designer, illustrator and artist.
He has created typefaces and type illustrations for some of the world’s biggest companies, publications and events, including the likes of Apple, Nike, Intel, The New York Times, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics and the latest re-issue of J.D. Salinger’s The Catcher in the Rye.
As a senior type designer at Monotype for nine years, he developed custom typefaces for clients including British Airways, The Daily Telegraph and H&M. His limited-edition prints are becoming increasingly popular as collectibles, and a newfound love of calligraphy has pushed his work in exciting new directions.
He is passionate about letterforms.
Calligraphy is enjoying a renaissance at the moment. This filter is based on expressive, modern calligraphy made using a folded ruling pen and metallic ink. The strokes are made at speed, which creates random shapes and splatters that would be hard to create digitally. I like this very analogue process. The resulting letterforms have vitality. They look primal, emotional and dynamic.
